Easter Sunday

Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and is Christianity's central feast. Western churches calculate it as a Sunday from March 22 through April 25.

Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and is the central feast of Christianity. It is always Sunday, but not a fixed Gregorian date. Western Easter can fall from March 22 through April 25, and its placement determines Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Ascension and Pentecost. The familiar rule uses a church-calendar full moon rather than simply looking at the sky.

What Easter Celebrates

The New Testament accounts describe Jesus’s crucifixion, burial and discovery of the empty tomb on the first day of the week. Christian belief understands the resurrection as victory over sin and death. Churches express that belief in worship ranging from an overnight vigil to sunrise services and morning Communion.

“Easter” is the usual English name. Many Christians use Pascha, derived from the term for Passover. “Resurrection Sunday” is also common. The names reflect language and tradition, not separate holidays.

Easter closes Holy Week and begins an Easter season that lasts beyond the Sunday itself. In Catholic liturgy, the Easter Triduum begins on Holy Thursday evening and reaches its high point at the Easter Vigil. The day after Good Friday is Holy Saturday, a period of waiting before the vigil.

How the Western Easter Date Is Calculated

The plain-language rule is: Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. If that full moon falls on Sunday, Easter is the following Sunday. The possible dates are March 22 through April 25.

Three words need care. “Ecclesiastical” means the church calculation uses a defined table, not necessarily the instant an astronomer observes a full moon. “March 21” is a fixed church-calendar stand-in for the spring equinox. “After” means a Sunday full moon pushes Easter forward one week.

The method, called computus, models lunar cycles through a 19-year pattern. It was developed so churches in different places could determine future feast dates without waiting for local observation. Gregorian calendar reform in 1582 adjusted both civil dates and the Easter tables used in Western churches.

This explains apparent contradictions in some years. A weather app may label a full moon on a date that seems to require a different Easter. The church is consulting its table, not that app. The step-by-step Easter guide shows the arithmetic used in modern calendar software.

Why Western and Orthodox Dates Differ

Catholic and most Protestant churches use the Gregorian calendar and Western computus. Many Eastern Orthodox churches calculate Pascha with conventions based on the older Julian calendar. March 21 Julian currently corresponds to a later Gregorian date, and the lunar tables also differ.

The result may be a shared Sunday or a separation of one or more weeks. This is not simply because Orthodox churches “wait until after Passover,” a common oversimplification. It is mainly the consequence of different calendar and tabular systems.

When a US event says “Easter” without qualification, it usually means the Western date. A Greek, Russian, Serbian, Coptic or other Eastern congregation may publish a different schedule. Check the congregation rather than assuming.

From Early Christian Practice to a Shared Rule

The timing of the resurrection celebration was debated in the early church. Christians agreed on its connection to the Passion and the Jewish Passover season but did not all use the same annual method. Some communities emphasized the date of 14 Nisan; others emphasized Sunday.

The Council of Nicaea in 325 is associated with the effort to establish common Easter observance, though later mathematical development was needed to produce durable tables. Different regions still used different cycles for centuries. A fully uniform worldwide date never emerged.

Gregorian reform corrected drift in the Julian calendar’s relationship to the seasons. Catholic countries adopted the new calendar first, while Protestant states changed later. Great Britain and its colonies, including the territory that became the United States, adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. Orthodox churches made their own calendar decisions.

Those changes matter when reading early records. An Easter date printed in a colonial European source may be “Old Style” or “New Style.” A reliable historical conversion identifies both the jurisdiction and the calendar then in use.

Worship in the United States

The Easter Vigil begins after nightfall on Holy Saturday in Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran and other traditions. Fire, candles, scripture readings, baptism and Communion move the service from darkness toward celebration. Other churches emphasize a sunrise service recalling the early-morning visit to the tomb.

Music and flowers make Easter visually different from Lent. Congregations may welcome members who attend only occasionally, so seating and service schedules expand. Some hold outdoor worship, breakfast or children’s activities.

African American churches have shaped distinctive US Easter practices through music, preaching and dress. Immigrant congregations worship in many languages and carry foods and processions from their countries of origin. Orthodox communities celebrate Pascha with a midnight service and feast on their own calculated date.

Easter is not a federal holiday because it always occurs on Sunday, but institutions make separate choices. Public schools often place spring break near Easter without necessarily tying the schedule to it. Retail businesses may close, shorten hours or remain open. Easter Monday is a public holiday in several countries but not nationwide in the United States.

Eggs, Rabbits and Seasonal Customs

Eggs have long symbolized new life and became part of Christian Easter custom in Europe. Decorating, exchanging and hunting eggs took many forms before commercial candy and plastic eggs. Eastern Christian traditions may dye eggs red, while central and eastern European communities developed intricate decorative methods.

The Easter hare appeared in German-speaking traditions and traveled to North America with immigrants. In the United States it became the Easter Bunny, delivering baskets with candy and small gifts. The custom is cultural rather than part of church liturgy.

At the White House, public egg-rolling traditions date to the nineteenth century. The event moved to the White House grounds in 1878 during Rutherford B. Hayes’s presidency after concerns about activity on the Capitol grounds. Modern events include games, readings and performances.

Foods vary: ham and lamb, breads, cakes, eggs and spring vegetables appear in different communities. None is required across Christianity. The family meal often marks the end of Lenten fasting or personal restrictions.

Easter, Passover and Responsible Language

Easter’s timing is historically connected to Passover, and the English word Paschal comes from that relationship. The holidays are not interchangeable. Passover follows the Hebrew calendar and commemorates the Exodus; Easter follows Christian theology and its own calculation.

Christian Passion teaching has sometimes encouraged antisemitic claims of collective Jewish guilt. Responsible churches reject that charge and teach the Roman execution of Jesus in its historical setting. Calendar proximity should support accurate learning, not stereotypes.

Using the Easter Dates Table

The table below lists Western Easter dates and weekdays, then links each entry to its full year calendar. Easter will always show Sunday, but the numbered date can move more than a month. Related observances move with it: Mardi Gras is 47 days earlier, Ash Wednesday 46 days earlier and Good Friday two days earlier.

For a historical event, confirm the tradition and calendar convention before choosing a date. For ordinary US planning, the table supplies the Western date used by Catholic and most Protestant churches while leaving room for Orthodox communities’ separate Pascha calendar.

Frequently asked questions

When is Easter Sunday in 2027?

Western Easter Sunday in 2027 is March 28. The date is calculated from church-calendar tables: Easter is the Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. Orthodox Easter in the same civil year may be different because many Orthodox churches use another calculation convention.

Why does the date of Easter change every year?

Easter combines a weekday, a seasonal boundary and a lunar table rather than using a fixed numbered date. The relevant ecclesiastical full moon can occur on different dates, and Easter then moves to the following Sunday. Western Easter can be as early as March 22 or as late as April 25.

Is the Easter full moon the astronomical full moon?

Not necessarily. Churches use an ecclesiastical approximation defined by calendar tables, historically designed so communities could calculate the feast consistently. The observed astronomical full moon can occur on another civil date because of time zones and the difference between the tabular model and the moon's actual motion.

Why is Orthodox Easter sometimes later?

Most Orthodox churches calculate Pascha using rules tied to the Julian calendar, while Western churches use the Gregorian calendar and Western tables. The systems sometimes produce the same Sunday and sometimes do not. It is inaccurate to say that all Christians worldwide celebrate Easter on one Gregorian date.

Is Easter a US federal holiday?

No. Easter is always Sunday, when federal offices are normally closed anyway, but it is not one of the statutory federal holidays. School spring breaks, retail hours and Monday closures are local or institutional decisions. Easter Monday is also not a nationwide US public holiday.
