Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday. Christians remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus through scripture, prayer, silence and, in many traditions, fasting. The date moves from late March to late April because it is anchored to Easter. It is not a US federal holiday, although particular states, schools, employers and financial markets may close.
What Good Friday Commemorates
The New Testament places Jesus’s crucifixion in Jerusalem before the Jewish Sabbath during Passover time. Christian worship on Good Friday reads accounts of his arrest, trial, crucifixion and burial. Different denominations interpret parts of the story through their own theology, but the day is consistently solemn rather than celebratory.
Good Friday belongs to Holy Week. In Catholic usage it falls within the Easter Triduum, one liturgical observance extending from the evening Mass of Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday evening. Friday cannot be understood as an isolated memorial; its place in the sequence points toward the Easter Vigil and resurrection.
The day has several English names. “Good Friday” is standard in the United States. Some older sources use Holy Friday, Great Friday or Black Friday, though the last now overwhelmingly means the shopping day after Thanksgiving in American usage.
How the Good Friday Date Is Calculated
Find Western Easter Sunday and move back two days. The result will always be Friday, from March 20 through April 23. The date has no separate astronomical rule; all of its movement comes from Easter.
Western churches determine Easter as the Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon on or after March 21. That places Easter from March 22 to April 25. Eastern Orthodox churches generally use the Julian calendar in part of their calculation, so Orthodox Pascha and Good Friday often occur later.
For a worked example, Easter fell on April 12 in 1998. Subtracting Saturday, April 11, and Friday, April 10, identifies Good Friday. The year table below performs that step for every calendar in the archive.
No observed-date rule moves Good Friday when it meets another event. It is already defined as Friday. A business that closes may choose different hours on Thursday or Monday, but those choices do not change the holiday date.
Worship, Silence and the Cross
Roman Catholic churches do not celebrate Mass on Good Friday. The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion includes scripture readings, solemn intercessions, veneration of the cross and distribution of Communion consecrated the previous evening. The US bishops say the service normally takes place around 3 p.m., traditionally associated with the time of Jesus’s death, but local needs can move it later.
Many Protestant churches hold a Tenebrae service using readings, music and gradually extinguished lights. Others organize a three-hour service from noon to 3 p.m., Stations of the Cross, or an ecumenical gathering. Worship style varies from quiet spoken prayer to preaching and choral works.
Outdoor processions reenacting the Stations of the Cross are important in some Latino Catholic communities. Participants may walk neighborhood streets and stop for readings and prayer. Organizers usually coordinate traffic and safety with local authorities. These devotional reenactments are not intended to reproduce physical suffering.
Churches sometimes cover or remove decorations. Bells may be silent, and music is limited. The restraint creates a contrast with the lights and music of the Easter Vigil.
Fasting and Food Traditions
For Latin-rite Catholics in the United States, Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence. Abstinence from meat applies beginning at age 14. The fasting norm for ages 18 through 59 allows one full meal and two smaller amounts that together do not equal another meal. Illness, pregnancy and other health needs excuse a person from fasting.
Other Christians may fast in different ways or not at all. Orthodox Christians follow their own fasting disciplines. Some Protestant congregations encourage a simple meal or personal sacrifice but do not issue binding rules.
Hot cross buns are associated with Good Friday in British and some American households. Fish meals are common among Catholics because of meat abstinence, but eating fish is not the point of the observance. A vegetarian meal works equally well under the rule.
The fast, where practiced, directs attention toward prayer and solidarity rather than dieting. Catholic guidance encourages continuing the Good Friday fast through Holy Saturday when possible, ending with the Easter Vigil.
Some congregations collect an offering for humanitarian or holy-site work, while others organize quiet service projects. Those practices connect devotion with the needs of living neighbors, but they remain local choices. The defining calendar observance is still the Friday remembrance within Holy Week.
Is Good Friday a Day Off in the United States?
Good Friday is not listed among federal holidays, so federal agencies and mail delivery normally operate. Public-school policies vary. Some districts close because of local tradition or because a large share of families would otherwise be absent; others schedule spring break around Easter without naming a religious holiday.
State and local government schedules also vary. A date may appear as a holiday for certain state employees without creating a nationwide rule. Courts can follow a separate calendar from executive agencies.
US stock exchanges, including the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, traditionally close on Good Friday even though it is not a federal banking holiday. Commercial banks may remain open. That difference is a useful warning against treating “markets closed” and “bank holiday” as synonyms.
Employers generally handle time away through normal leave and religious-accommodation processes. Because services may occur during the workday, an employee may request schedule flexibility rather than a full-day absence.
Respectful Historical Context
Christian readings of the Passion have at times been misused to blame Jewish people collectively for Jesus’s death, contributing to antisemitism and violence. Major churches have explicitly rejected collective Jewish guilt. Responsible Good Friday teaching places the Roman execution in its historical context and does not turn a religious narrative into an accusation against living Jews.
This concern is particularly important because Good Friday regularly falls during or near Passover. The calendar proximity reflects the New Testament setting, but the two observances belong to distinct faith traditions. A school lesson should explain both without presenting Judaism merely as background for Christianity.
Good Friday in a Year Calendar
On a calendar, Good Friday comes after Ash Wednesday and immediately before Easter weekend. The table below links its dates to full year pages, where local planners can also see federal holidays and other observances.
A historical document may use a different name or an Orthodox date. Check the church tradition, location and calendar system before matching it to a Gregorian date. For modern US planning, the listed date follows the Western Easter rule used by Catholic and most Protestant churches.

Frequently asked questions
When is Good Friday in 2027?
Good Friday in 2027 is March 26, two days before Easter Sunday on March 28. Its date always follows the Western Easter calculation, so it can occur between March 20 and April 23. Orthodox Good Friday may fall on a different date.
Why is it called Good Friday?
The English name has been explained as an older use of “good” meaning holy, though its exact linguistic development is uncertain. Christians call the day good because the crucifixion is understood within the larger story of salvation and resurrection, not because suffering and execution are treated as good in themselves.
Is Good Friday a federal holiday?
No. Federal offices and the US Postal Service normally operate. Some states, counties, schools and employers close, and major US stock exchanges traditionally do not trade. Because those rules come from separate authorities, a person should verify the exact institution rather than assume a nationwide closure.
Do Catholics eat meat on Good Friday?
Latin-rite Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Good Friday, and adults ages 18 through 59 are ordinarily bound by fasting rules. Health and other exemptions apply, and Eastern Catholics follow their own law. Other Christian denominations have different practices or leave fasting to individual choice.
What time is a Good Friday service?
Catholic guidance normally places the Celebration of the Lord's Passion in the afternoon, around 3 p.m., though pastoral need can justify a later time, not after 9 p.m. Protestant services vary widely and may include noon worship, an evening Tenebrae service or a community service shared by several churches.
