How to Print a Year Calendar or Save It as a PDF

Use the Print button on a year page for a clean calendar-only layout, then choose paper size, orientation, scaling or Save as PDF in your browser.

Every Old Calendars year page is printable without a separate download. Open the year, choose Print above the calendar, and the browser creates a preview that removes navigation, ad spaces and long article sections. You can send that layout to a printer or choose Save as PDF.

This approach gives you control over US Letter or A4 paper, color, margins and destination. It also keeps the printable calendar tied to the live year page, where holiday corrections and date notes can be reviewed before saving a copy.

Start in the calendar archive and open the year you need. The page places all twelve months first, followed by holiday tables and year facts. Above the month grid, the display controls let you show week numbers, moon phases and weekend shading.

Set those options before opening the print dialog. Then use the Print button, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or press Command+P on macOS. Chrome and Microsoft Edge both support those shortcuts.

In the preview, check five settings:

  1. Select the intended printer or Save as PDF.
  2. Confirm the paper size, usually Letter in the United States or A4 elsewhere.
  3. Try landscape orientation when the month columns feel crowded.
  4. Keep scale at the default first; reduce it only if a column clips.
  5. Review every preview page before printing or saving.

Browser and printer drivers use slightly different labels. “Layout” may mean portrait or landscape, while “Scale,” “Fit,” or “Shrink to printable area” controls how content fits inside the printer’s margins.

Save the printable calendar as a PDF

The PDF option lives inside the browser print dialog. In Chrome, open the destination list and choose Save as PDF. In Edge, select a PDF printer or the available save-to-PDF destination. On macOS, the system print panel also offers PDF saving.

Choose a descriptive file name such as 1998-calendar-us-holidays.pdf. Including the year and country helps when several downloads collect in the same folder. If the file supports a research project, add a short note elsewhere with the page URL and the date you saved it, because holiday explanations can be corrected later.

Saving as PDF does not upload the calendar to Old Calendars. The browser creates the file on your device. Where it is saved depends on the folder you select and the browser or operating-system download settings.

The year-page title uses “printable” rather than promising a special prebuilt PDF. That wording reflects the feature accurately: you create the PDF from the same reviewed calendar shown on screen.

US Letter versus A4

US Letter measures 8.5 by 11 inches and is the normal office-paper size in the United States. A4 measures 210 by 297 millimeters, or about 8.27 by 11.69 inches, and is common in most other countries.

The shapes are close but not identical. A layout that fits one can wrap differently on the other, particularly near the bottom margin. Choose the size that matches the paper loaded in the printer. Selecting A4 in the browser while feeding Letter paper can cause scaling or cropping even when the on-screen preview looks reasonable.

Landscape orientation gives the calendar more horizontal room. Portrait can be useful when the printer or binder setup requires it, but a full twelve-month view may use more pages. Old Calendars’s print stylesheet arranges four month cards across on a wide print layout; the browser then adapts that layout to the selected paper and margins.

If text is too small, do not immediately raise the scale above 100 percent. First try landscape, reduce margins where the printer permits it, or print fewer pages per sheet. A larger scale can push the final month column outside the printable area.

Color, background graphics and ink use

Federal holidays are highlighted in red on screen, and other date types use their own colors. A browser may omit background colors unless Background graphics is enabled. Microsoft documents this option under the print dialog’s additional settings.

You do not need background graphics for a useful reference copy. Holiday names and observed dates appear in the table text, and the print layout preserves numbers and headings. Grayscale is often the better choice for a working copy that will be marked by hand.

For a presentation copy, turn on background graphics and inspect contrast in the preview. Colors can shift between screen and paper, and a low ink cartridge can make pale fills disappear. The exact result depends on the printer, driver, paper and color setting rather than the website alone.

Why the printed page looks simpler

A web page and a paper page solve different problems. Screen navigation, theme controls, year selectors and related-story cards are useful while browsing but waste space on paper. CSS print rules let a site hide those interface elements and rearrange the main content for printing or PDF output.

Old Calendars removes the header, footer, controls, advertising placeholders and long supporting sections from the printed version. It keeps the year heading and month grids. This is not missing content or a browser error; it is the intended printable view.

If you need the holiday explanations as well as the grid, print those sections separately from the browser or save the full web page through another browser feature. For an archival citation, the live URL and its listed sources are more useful than a date grid alone.

Fix clipping, blank pages or tiny text

Clipping usually comes from a mismatch among paper size, orientation, margins and scale. Confirm the paper size first, switch to landscape, and return scale to the default. Then lower the scale in small steps until all month columns appear.

An unexpected blank page can be caused by a printer driver, a browser extension or an old preview session. Cancel the dialog, reload the page and try again. If another simple website also fails to print, Microsoft recommends treating the browser, operating system, printer connection and driver as separate possible causes.

Tiny text often appears when “pages per sheet” is set to two or more. Return that option to one page per sheet. Also check whether the system dialog applied its own fit setting after the browser preview.

If a moon icon or holiday fill does not appear, turn on background graphics. If the labels matter more than color, leave the option off and use the holiday table on the web page as the reference.

Reuse an old calendar carefully

A printed year calendar can be reused when the target year has the same weekday for January 1 and the same leap status. Those two facts determine the weekday layout of every date. The matching-year section on each page lists compatible years, and the same-calendar year finder checks any year from 1900 through 2100.

The grid may match while the printed annotations do not. Easter, Lunar New Year and other movable observances can change dates. Historical events, election dates and school schedules also belong to their original year. Reuse the weekday grid, then replace or cover year-specific notes.

Old calendars are useful for genealogy folders, anniversary books and scrapbooks because they show the weekday context around a dated record. The day-of-week calculator is a quick independent check before a printed calendar becomes part of a finished project.

Keep a printable calendar useful

Write the purpose and source on the back of an archival copy. “Court deadline calendar,” “family birthdays,” or “newspaper research” will make more sense later than an unlabeled grid. Add the page URL and saved date when accuracy matters.

Do not use a general calendar as the sole authority for a filing deadline, bank closure or school schedule. The page can identify weekends and standard federal holidays, but the responsible institution may use its own definition of a business day. Verify that rule before relying on the printout.

For ordinary planning, the simple workflow is enough: open the correct year, choose the display options, print or save as PDF, and inspect the result before closing the preview.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save a calendar as a PDF?

Open a year page, choose Print, and select Save as PDF as the destination in your browser's print dialog. Review the preview, choose the paper size and orientation, then save the file to a folder you can find again.

Should I use US Letter or A4 paper?

Use US Letter for most printers and binders in the United States. Use A4 when that is your local or office standard. If the last column clips, switch paper size, choose landscape, or reduce the scale slightly.

Why are navigation and ads missing from the printout?

That is intentional. Old Calendars uses a print stylesheet that removes site navigation, controls, ads and long editorial sections so the twelve month grids use the page efficiently. The information remains available on the web page.

Can I print a calendar without color?

Yes. Choose black and white or grayscale in the print dialog. Holiday categories also use labels and table text outside the colored month cells, so the dates remain understandable without relying only on color.

Can I reuse an old printed calendar?

Yes, when the old year and target year start on the same weekday and are both common years or both leap years. Check the same-calendar section on the year page; movable holidays and events still need fresh labels.
